Why bother blogging?
“Why Bother Blogging? You can do better!” – the question and statement I recently heard the most. Be it from family or friends, everyone seems to think that blogging isn’t something I should waste my time doing. Maybe they’re right, maybe they’re wrong. I think only time will tell.
Why do I blog?
For as long as I remember, I have liked to share my life experiences, journeys, ideas, accomplishments, you name it! I wanted to share. Often, I felt like my sharing was coming off as bragging. It wasn’t receiving the reaction I thought I would get. I never really got the sense that they thought what I did was cool, interesting, exciting, or even worth sharing. And I’m not talking about crafting, as that’s rather new in my life. I’m talking about anything and everything in life that I would share.
I had a select few friends who genuinely liked to hear about my latest undertakings and the associated humorous anecdotes. But other than those few, no one else seems to enjoy my accomplishments in the way I was hoping.
Small Sharing Wasn't Enough
I was getting tired of sending my 3-4 friends updates on my adventures. So, I started a Facebook Messenger group where I would just send them updates and that worked for a while. I shared what I was up to, how did it, what didn’t work, all that good stuff. But I still had this feeling that I could share my experiences with more people. Maybe there were other people out there, like my friends, who wanted to hear about my trials and tribulations. Or maybe there were others out there that wanted to learn some of these things I was learning and sharing with my friends. And most of all, maybe there were people out there who wanted to be part of something great with me!
That was the beginning
That’s when the hamster in my head started running as fast as he could on that little wheel. Then all the hamsters started running and all the wheels inside my head started to turn at full speed. I needed to reach more people! I needed to share this with the world! There was no point in keeping all of this wonderful knowledge, learning and life stuck inside my head and only shared with a handful of people.
So, I made a plan! Be it a simple plan, and I was going to share! And from what I had read on-line, a good way to share was to blog. So, I planned to start a blog! How hard could it be? I mean, there were blogs everywhere!
Now, of course, this is not as easy as it sounds. I am not a techy person. At least not anymore. About 20 years ago I was, but times have changed and so has technology! There were lots of things I needed to learn to set up a web-page, but I’m smart and with time I’m sure I can learn anything!
And thus the blog was created!
I did a bunch of reading, I learned the basics that I needed to set up a website so I could blog. Let’s be honest here, I didn’t learn too much, I researched the best host and WordPress. That took a few days, but I resigned myself to learning everything else I needed along the way.
Once I was set on the host, I bought myself a subscription and I found my site name Katherine Learns Stuff. I was going to wait until I had content and a full-blown plan, but thanks to my other half, I just jumped in full speed ahead.
The site name may one day change, but as I’m just learning about all of this stuff, I thought it was fitting. I find the best way to learn anything new is to start doing it and doing it regularly. As you can see, now, here I am, doing it!
So, Why bother blogging?
So, when someone says “you can do so much better than blogging, why bother blogging?” My answer to you is this: I blog so that I can share with anyone and everyone that wants to listen and learn. I blog so that I don’t have to feel like I’m bragging about accomplishments but talking to friends that genuinely want to hear and read about it. And I blog because I have some time for myself at the end of the day where I can learn new things and share them with the world.
I hope that everyone that comes here does so because they want to learn to be better with me. And, if at the end of the day, I have one more person coming to listen and learn with me, I think my blog is a success.
